Join the Real Time (RT) oceanography data exchange demo

EMODnet Ingestion facilitates the inclusion of near real-time (NRT) data from oceanographic platforms into EMODnet (Physics), promoting accessibility and reducing duplication of effort. This aids in consolidating oceanographic data in EMODnet Geoviewer, enhancing public access and fostering partnerships.

To streamline the process and improve data coverage, the connection of NRT data to EMODnet occurs in two phases:

  • Inclusion of the source "as is," utilizing various technologies such as FTP, web APIs, Sensor Web Enablement (SWE), Data Access Broker (DAB), and ERDDAP.
  • Harmonization and validation of the data for long-term stewardship, involving assessments by data centers and potential integration into established European infrastructures.

Promotion from phase 1 to phase 2 may require additional steps like adopting common QC/QF and standardized metadata. Notably, phase 2 includes sub-levels, with validation achieved at the operational level before advancing to research-quality data stewardship.

Components of the RT Pilot are:.

  • SWE standard profiles: see https://odip.github.io/MarineProfilesForSWE/
  • Sensor Observation Service
  • EMODnet (N)RT Viewer service

For ERDDAP, an EMODnet docker package is available to organization interested in adopt this as connector. See the GitHub page at: https://github.com/EMODnet-Physics

The GitHub also includes a preliminary version of a light and easy installable mapviewer that consumes data from the ERDDAP docker. In other words, if the provider installs the docker following the provided examples/templates, he can also install this light mapviewer and see its data from a local interface that can easily adapted and expanded for internal purpose. This way the provider can deploy its own mapviewer and at the same time is adopting standards that facilitate immediate interoperability towards EMODnet Ingestion.
